The experienced excursionists know that cartography is an essential instrument to find their bearings safely.
For the Province of Piacenza there are two excursionist maps at the moment, scale 1:50000: the map n° 12 "The Piacenza’s Apennines" - edition 2004 (about the hilly area crosswise the four valleys) and the map n° 14 "The High Piacenza’s Apennines" edition 2006, about the rest of the provincial land.
The two maps form part of the regional series made by the Information and Geographic Systems Service of the Emilia Romagna Region.
Paths and numbers.
The provincial network by CAI has more than 100 paths that develop across about 800 km and are marked by white and red waymarks.
A range of numbers has been given to each valley:
_ The Arda Valley: paths from 901 to 999;
_ The Nure Valley: paths from 001 to 099;
_ The Trebbia Valley: paths from 101 to 199;
_ The Tidone and the Luretta Valleys: paths starting from 201.
The first number of each range corresponds to the main path of the ridge that divides two neighbouring drainage-basins:
_ 901 Arda/Nure;
_ 001 Nure/Trebbia;
_ 101 Trebbia/Tidone.
Moreover, there is an excursionistic Guide made by CAI (edition 2002) which describes 58 ring routes with white and red waymarks and contains some extracts of the above maps, such as information to get to the departure, difference in level, duration of the path, length, pictures, topographic map.
A 144 pages pocketbook to cross the whole Piacenza’s Apennines area, discovering an attractive and wild environment.
Besides, there is an exhaustive site - produced by the Emilia Romagna Region in cooperation with CAI - that makes easier the approach to excursionism: it’s PathsWEB, whose link is at the bottom of this page.
In the status bar, PathsWEB reports the coordinates of the point indicated by your mouse on the map in the geographic reference system WGS84, which represents latitude and longitude in millesimal degrees.
The paths may be displayed with Google Earth and downloaded in a GPS compatible format.
